Northern Star Quilter's Guild Take First Place in the Ultimate Guild Challenge!
For their 2023 challenge, the Northern Star Quilter's Guild got playful with a "Card Tricks" theme! Each member chose (or drew blindly!) a card from a traditional deck, then let their creativity run wild. Instead of suits, they stitched in their favorite sewing notions, making sure to feature the card's number or letter. With a consistent quilt size (32" x 42"), black-and-white binding (provided by the guild), and rounded corners, the result was a cohesive "deck" of vibrant, imaginative quilts that truly dazzles like a winning hand!
April Russell, Challenge Coordinator for the Northern Star Quilter's Guild of Bedford, New York, talks with AQS Executive Show Director Michelle Renee Hiatt about their First Place entry in the Ultimate Guild Challenge at the 2024 AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids show.
April also discusses her entry, JOSIE THE JOY RIDING JOKER, featuring a playful joker mouse riding a rotary cutter! Claire Hibbard shares details about her entry, MS. JOKER PLZZZ. The other entrants in the challenge are:
ACE OF PINCUSHIONS by Jennifer Larrabee
ACE OF SPADES by Caryl Castellon
ALWAYS ON ALERT by Marie Sugar
KING OF THREADS by Judy Simeck
MY FAVORITE JACK by Chris Roche
TWO OF TOMATOES by Carol Auer

She is IRONING, not pressing. That can distort fabric and is a bad habit to develop.

This has been a great quilt along. It inspired me to make a variation. I really like LeMoyne and Hunter’s Star quilts. I dislike..intensely…LeMoyne and Hunter’s Star quilts made from HST’s. They are a poor reproduction of these beautiful blocks as the balance is off. This method works so easily. I hope your wonderful series inspires others to make this project. So much variety can be had. It also avoids bias that other methods that cut the traps from the center of an HST. Too much bias that will not provide good results. This method keeps straight of grain where it belongs. I don’t have her ruler which many will find helpful. My Creative Grids Diamond Dimension ruler and my Simple Folded Corners (Antler Designs) allow me to make the traps and accurate cuts. I have and recommend many of DT’s rulers. I am at the point in my quilting life I can make these swaps easily.

Now I understand the different width. I've never made one of these before and I'm still waiting on the rapid fire ruler to show up. Very good instructions. One thing I can't figure out and have never asked. Why does everyone call it "setting the seam" when they press sewn fabric? You're not setting the seam, you are relaxing the threads so that you can either press open or to the side easily. To me, pressing the seam open or closed is setting it. Good videos.
